Thus the conception of an efficient WW1 gas mask was extremely important. Despite the signature of the Hague Convention in 18, France, Germany and many other countries did not stop their research and did not give up on using these weapons during the First World War. In the early 20th century, the German Empire chemical industry was very developed and this country quickly became a world leader for chemistry and could swiftly develop the chemical weapons that evolved all along the war. Before WW1 started, France also created a suffocating grenade. Yet, at that time, chemical weapons are also being developed and shells filled with sulfur oxide, picric acid or chlorine were used by headquarters. At the end of 19th century, wars – particularly the Crimean War and the American Civil War – privileged production of artillery weapons such as canons. Can you guess the name of that company? Think Optical.Leica. Researching on it, I see that E Leitz was Ernst Leitz GmbH which is broken up into three companies all under the same name. For me its kind of badass because I didnt know how significant the town of Wetzlar was other than where half of my family lives and Johann Wolfgang von Goethe's infatuation with a Charlotte Buff. Stumbled across something badass which was the German Trench Periscope which has E Leitz Wetzlar stamped on it. I just happen to find the section for Arms of the First World War. ![]() This may or may not tickle your fancy but The Royal Armouries Collection has a nice amount of high res images to look at.
